4c’s of Diamonds

If you’re uncertain about what to look for in a diamond, start by understanding the 4 C’s: cut, color, clarity, and carat. Introduced by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in the 1940s, these four criteria offer a consistent framework for assessing and determining diamond quality.

Cut

Fair

Diamonds in this category exhibit noticeable imperfections in their proportions, symmetry, and polish. These issues often result in reduced brilliance and sparkle. Fair cut diamonds may have less desirable visual appeal compared to higher categories.

Good

Diamonds with a good cut show better proportions and symmetry than fair cuts, but still may not maximize the stone's potential brilliance. While they reflect more light than fair cut diamonds, they don't achieve the same level of sparkle as higher categories.

Very Good

Diamonds classified as very good cut offer a high level of brilliance and sparkle. They have well-balanced proportions, symmetry, and polish, which significantly enhance their visual appeal. These diamonds reflect most of the light that enters them, creating a pleasing sparkle.

Ideal

Ideal cut diamonds are expertly crafted to achieve the highest level of brilliance and fire. They have precise proportions, symmetry, and polish, allowing them to reflect nearly all the light that enters. This category represents an optimal balance between beauty and technical excellence.

Super Ideal

Super ideal cut diamonds are the pinnacle of cut quality. They are crafted with meticulous attention to every detail, optimizing light performance to the highest degree. These diamonds exhibit exceptional brilliance, fire, and scintillation, often exceeding the standard ideal cut in their visual impact.

Color

I - Color

Near-colorless with slight traces of color that may be noticeable under close examination. This grade offers a good value for its quality.

H - Color

Near-colorless with some detectable color compared to higher-grade diamonds, but still provides excellent value.

G - Color

Near-colorless with a hint of color noticeable when compared to diamonds of higher grades, yet still offers excellent value.

F - Color

Colorless with only a trace of color detectable by an expert gemologist. This grade is considered high quality and falls into the "colorless" category.
